I don't think PS1 games work, as for PS2 they do work but only in certain models:

80GB - Many games work
60GB - Most games work
20GB - Most games work

40GB - None work, as this PS3 model is not backwards compatible at all, therefore DON'T get it if you want to play PS2 games on it.
