For me, it was The Broker by John Grisham.

I thought it was going to be boring due to it being about a broker, but was wrong. Here's a quick summary: A big shot broker gets his hands on some powerful satellite software, and he gets caught trying to sell it to other non-US nations. He decides to take prison as a safe option of escape. After 6 years of being there, he is set free by the CIA in hopes of them getting the software or getting him killed by his enemies. He then is transported to a foreign nation and he has to use his wits to survive..

Once Upon A Time in the North. The second 'mini' book set in the His Dark Materials world.

Once Upon a Time in the North is a prequel story for Lee Scorsby, the Texan Aeronaught, and his adventures in the Northern tundra's and his dealings with the Pasnerbjorn, or Armored Bears, a race of talking war-like bears. Particularly the fallen king (and another main character of the main series) Iorek Byrnison.
