The world of technology is stuffed with jargon and although techie types may say they know what it all means, they rarely actually do. But if you want to be in the know and find your way around the wonderful but sometimes scary internet, read on.
Types of possible spam: Advergaming, Malware, Viral marketing, Zombies, Click fraud, phishing, and denial-of-service acts, Trojans Advergaming: Involves advertising through a game. Usually web-based games on websites. Malware: Very nasty programs that can infect your PC, mobile phone or even your iPod. Spyware and zombies are forms of Malware. Trojan: A virus. Often found in programs/webpages that have been spammed to your email, etc. Click fraud, phising and denial-of-service attacks: Click fraudsters imitate the user of a web browser to generate charges per click in regard to pay-per-click adverts, even though they're not interested in what's for sale. Phishers are worse in a way, as they try to get a hold of usernames, and credit card and other details, so they can steal from peoples bank accounts. Spamdexing: Basically the higher a site's ranking (the idea is to get in the top ten of any Google listing) the more valuable it is. So, people will use every trick they can to boost their rating. Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is called, is big business, 'White Hate' SEO uses legitimate methods, while 'Black Hat' SEO resorts to tricks. The Black Hat practice of posting links to unrelated websites simple to boost search engine rankings is called 'Spamdexing'. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft use their own automated search tools, called crawlers, bots and spiders, to find pages for their search results. These undertake massive searches of websites and look at things like content, key words and indexes, listing the results in huge databases. When you do an online search you are really searching these master databases. RE: Jargon/Spam - What it is, who does it & why
lol spam isn't leet...
Spamming the spammer 100x more is though. Anyway, some good stuff you posted, and I'll add a bit to what you said. Watchout for phishing as it's starting to become VERY popular now, especially on sites like MySpace. Always check the URL address bar, and check for a SSL lock. Also if you are mysteriously taken to a login page, erase the url in the address bar and type it in yourself as it might be a fake one. An example of a typical phishing URL: http-myspace.com.spammersite.com spammersite.com/www.myspace.com/ Taking a quick glance at it, it all looks real, including the login page, so you might fall for it if your not paying attention. While it's easy to duplicate the login page, the URL isn't and it's usually easy to spot the flaw. Look at both my examples, notice that the actually site is not really myspace.com and that the myspace part is added either before the .com or after it. RE: Jargon/Spam - What it is, who does it & why
I'm lost about the leet stuff.
Here is some more stuff: Basically the higher a site's ranking (the idea is to get in the top ten of any Google listing) the more valuable it is. So, people will use every trick they can to boost their rating. Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is called, is big business, 'White Hate' SEO uses legitimate methods, while 'Black Hat' SEO resorts to tricks. These undertake massive searches of websites and look at things like content, key words and indexes, listing the results in huge databases. When you do an online search you are really searching these master databases. -- The worst virus I have had was where this program 'Google Toolbar' was downloaded to my computer, and it made over 100 toll-calls to Papa New Guinea (cant spell it) and yeah, we had a very high phone bill, it was like $800 - $1000, our average phone bill is about $150 - $200 ![]() -- ![]() TinyPic Is the best (: Check out my blog Image Link Storage: http://i29.tinypic.com/125jmkn.gif http://i29.tinypic.com/rw0v29.gif |

RE: Jargon/Spam - What it is, who does it & why
Most likely it was an infected Google Toolbar installation file or a fake file in general as the official one doesn't have any spyware/malware. The same can happen with any other file so you should always get it off the official site to prevent problems or off trusted sites like download.com etc.
