RE: Gamer status
*fixes monocle* It is fine, dear chap.

Sorry. I just like the idea of sitting in large armchair, in front of a roaring fire, fancy suit on, top hat, monocle, pipe... with a pink DS in my hands playing Pokemon Pearl =D

i don't refer to myself as a retro gamer cause that would mean that i would only play the retro games, i have n64 and ps2, so i have the mid-gen when i need something three de. and i also play WoW now, so that disqualifies me as a retro gamer.

N64 and PS2(specifically the 64) I would consider Retro now. Just because you dwindle in a game of WOW now and again, doesn't mean it disqualifies you from being a retro gamer. The way I see it, is if you majority of gaming is done on past gen consoles then your more of a retro / old school gamer than anything.

PS: The dreamcast is mega awesome.

whaaaaaat? no way is the n64 and ... ps2? i dont know if you ment ps1 or what but even so, thats not retro. being the hardcore retro gamer that i am, i consider sega genesis and snes the newest retro consoles. and thats hard for me too. but hear me now, n64 and ps1 are not retro. i was having this conversation with a buddy of mine the other night. talking about how the consoles and games that we see as new will someday be retro... i just didnt think it was happening already. im just saying, those are not retro. i see retro gaming as an art more than any other kind of gaming. and ill agree with you by saying i play new games now and then, im a team fortress 2 fan. but the newest console i own is an original xbox... but i dont even play that, the one that is always hooked up and running is the dreamcast like ive said before, but just because i play a console from last gen or 2 gens ago, doesnt make it retro or old school... sorry im just touchy on the subject.

RE: Gamer status
Im with side_scroll'r, if you can actually tell that it has three dimensionsm without the horrible mega lag of the snes, then it is far beyond retro.

Games are still being released for the ps2, so how can it even qualify as retro?

But i am angry with the game stores now. x< They have compleately run out of snes games! and right after i get a car and can go when i plz with out walking. >.<

has this horrible act against the retro happend to any of you guys??

RE: Gamer status
From Wiki:

"Retro is a term used to describe aspects of modern culture which are consciously derivative or imitative of those trends, modes, fashions, or attitudes of the recent past which have or had come to be seen as unfashionable.

Retrogaming is a pastime which is becoming increasingly popular where individuals play video games on vintage computers or vintage game consoles; although the idea of what constitutes a vintage or retro machine is one open to debate. Typically most retro gamers are interested in Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and classic Game Boy games and consoles."

So retro means vintage, old and unfashionable. would you say owning a N64 to be fashionable? The n64 was released in 1996(1997 in Europe) that's like what 12 years ago? N64 is, by todays standards a Retro Console.

I suppose the PS2 isn't that retro at all come to think of it, I often forget that games are still be put out on it.
but i guess it's what you define each console to be, I'd class Dreamcast and the saturn and PS1 to be Retro, what else you you class them as? (apart from classing the dreamcast as kick ass, that is.)

RE: Gamer status
i have alot of consoles have master system, mega drive, snes, nes, gameboy , gb colour, gb adavance, wii, 360,, ps2, ps1, n64, neo geo pocket and my PC obv tht i use. i have loads in my loft....

so im a general gamer i would agree the n64 is now a retro console as it has been so long since games have been released for it. ps1 i would say is border line

RE: Gamer status
Personally i would classify them as transitional, or mid-gen, they are the stepping stones from a 32-bit mario game to the 1080i CoD4 gen. To me they are not retro cause it was more a bridge then a platform. The Atari 2600, NES, XBox360, Nintendo Wii, And Ps3 are really their own islands, the n64, ps1 and ps2 are the bridges connecting them to each other.

The argument may arise that the N64 gave birth to the 3D gaming, but thats precisely why its a bridge rather then an island. do you get it? i suck at explaining, but the idea is there.
